Trauma & PTSD

Trauma, from the Greek for “wound”, “is not what happens to you; it is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you … It is not the blow on the head, but the concussion I get.” - Gabor Maté

Anyone can experience trauma. Trauma refers to a significant (and sometimes life-threatening) event that causes profound distress and disrupts our sense of safety and stability.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It can lead to severe anxiety, flashbacks, and a range of other symptoms that disrupt daily life.

Common Challenges

XYZ:

  • Re-Experiencing the Trauma: flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts

  • Avoidance and Numbing: avoidance of triggers, emotional numbing, memory suppression

  • Increased Arousal and Reactivity: being easily startled, irritability and anger, difficulty concentrating

  • Mind and Mood Changes: negative thoughts, guilt and shame, loss of interest

  • Physical Symptoms: sleep problems, physical pain, fatigue

  • Behavioural Issues: social withdrawal, risky behaviours, substance use

Our Work Together

The constant exposure to high-stakes situations and the need to remain composed under pressure can take a toll on our sense of resiliency and detract from our quality of life and relationships. My goal is to provide a safe, confidential, and understanding space where first responders can address the mental and emotional challenges that are facing them on the job and in their personal lives.

In our work we might aim to:

  • Improve emotional regulation

  • Address relational concerns

  • Process traumatic experiences

  • Build on your existing resilience
